For my sweet friend, the question is how to break through the lies that she has been told about whether she is good enough, or smart enough, or just plain enough to even have dreams. The lies have lived on in her head and her heart, and have told her that her future is bleak, and she will never be able to achieve much in life.
We are working together to put the lies behind her. We talk about what is true and what is not true. She has homework to do after we meet each week. Homework that requires facing the lies, calling them what they are, and replacing them with the truths of God’s love for her, that she is, as Psalm 139: 14 says “… fearfully and wonderfully made; [and God’s works are] wonderful…” This is such a difficult truth for so many of us to appropriate for ourselves, but it is important work.
As I coach her through this transition, she is beginning to begin to dream; it is a gradual process and it will take time. But every now and then, I see a spark in her eyes – a glint of seeing what is possible. The fog of feeling unloved and unvalued is beginning to fade away, and the light of hope is peeking through, warming her heart, soul, and mind. It is amazing to watch the transformation, and a pleasure to cheer her on this journey.
Near the end of our last meeting, she told me that she wanted to move forward more than she wanted to stay stuck where she was. The thought of staying where she was scared her more than the work she is doing to break free of the past. One of my favorite quotes captured her feeling perfectly.
“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.”
– Anais Nin
